With more people working away from their offices these days, conducting their business on laptops and BlackBerries and such, portable printers are becoming increasingly popular items.
For in this paperless world, there are still people who need a good old-fashioned hardcopy to do their jobs properly.
Buying a portable means you will have to pay more to get fewer features than you have on your office printer. That's a trade-off you have to accept to get portability.
What you can afford is one decision you will have to make. What you need in a printer is another.
Think about the features that are important to you. Weight for a portable machine can run from just over one pound for the Pentex PocketJet to over 9 pounds for the Hewlett Packard H470. 9 pounds may not seem like much, but it will be if you have to carry it around in your briefcase for any length of time.
Conversely, a much smaller portable may not have the capability to print in color, for example, or the quality of the printouts won't be as sharp. Depending on how you intend to use the printer and what you require it to do, these are considerations you will have to factor in before making a purchase.
There will come a day when technology will be able to incorporate print capability into a laptop, but for the time being, for those who need to be able to print on the fly, a portable printers are the way to go.
